Freedom Comes in Many Forms | A Reflection on the Freedom Within

Updated: Jul 6

A Question I've Been Sitting With

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about freedom. Not just political freedom. Not the kind that's celebrated on holidays or written into history books. But the kind we experience in our everyday lives. The kind we experience within ourselves.

What does it actually mean to feel free within ourselves?

I started thinking....if I believe my worth depends on how productive I am... am I really free? If I can't rest without feeling guilty... am I free? If I'm afraid to disappoint people because my value feels tied to how much I give... is that freedom?

The Messages We Inherit

These questions have led me to think about the systems we've inherited and the messages we've absorbed without always realizing it.

When I think about patriarchy, I don't only think about how it has harmed women. I think about how it has harmed men too. How it has shaped us all.

Women have often been taught to disconnect from the wisdom of their bodies, to ignore their natural rhythms, to keep giving, producing, nurturing, and caring, even when they're exhausted. Many of us learn that our value comes from how much we can do for everyone else.

Men, in different ways, have often been taught to disconnect from their emotional world. Many boys grow up learning that vulnerability is weakness, that strength means carrying everything alone, and that their worth is measured by what they achieve, provide, or accomplish.

Neither of those feel like freedom to me.

Freedom Has Become Personal

The older I get, the more freedom has become something much quieter and much more personal. Freedom, to me, looks like existing in my body without believing I constantly need to change it. It's learning to celebrate this body for all that it has carried me through instead of spending my life trying to fix it.

It's allowing myself to feel my emotions instead of believing I have to suppress them or "get over them." It's honoring the rhythms of my body instead of expecting myself to function like a machine every single day.

It's moving because it brings me joy, not because I need to earn my worth. It's spending time in nature because it reminds me that everything has seasons—including me. It's having the courage to say no when something doesn't align with my values, and yes to the things that make me feel more alive.

"More than anything, freedom within feels like coming home to myself."

Imagining Something Different

When I look around, I see a culture that often rewards productivity over presence, competition over collaboration, and achievement over connection. We celebrate being busy while quietly burning ourselves out.

And I can't help but wonder...

What if freedom isn't about proving ourselves?

What if freedom is remembering that our worth was never something we had to earn?

I imagine a world where children grow up knowing they are enough simply because they exist. A world where men can cry without shame. Where women can trust the wisdom of their bodies instead of constantly overriding it.

Where success isn't measured by money, status, or productivity, but by the health of our relationships, our communities, and our ability to care for one another. I believe we each carry essential gifts, and when we are forced into rigid expectations of who we're supposed to be, we all lose something.

The Kind of Freedom I've Been Reflecting On

Freedom comes in many forms.

There are freedoms protected by laws, freedoms that people have fought—and continue to fight—for, and freedoms that not everyone experiences equally. Those freedoms matter deeply, and they deserve our attention and our care.

But the freedom I've been reflecting on lately is something a little different. It's the freedom that exists within us.

The freedom to be fully ourselves.

To exist in our bodies without believing they need to be earned, fixed, or perfected.

To feel our emotions without shame.

To move in rhythm with our bodies and with nature instead of constantly pushing against them.

To express ourselves authentically.

To rest.

To create.

To love.

To belong.

To remember that our worth has never been something we had to prove.

This is the kind of freedom my heart keeps returning to.

The freedom to be fully human. Freedom in finally believing that who we already are is worthy of existing, feeling, loving, and taking up space.
